low-cost-ways-to-secure-your-website

Let me ask you a question; How would you feel, if you woke up one day and find out your website has been hacked? Maybe your website is pre-suspended by your hosting company or even worst maybe it’s completely disappeared. This is every business owner’s worst nightmare. And, there are some businesses as well that cannot recover such kind of huge loss.

But who’s responsible for your website security? Well, let me give you an analogy. Think of website posting like an apartment block. Your hosting company is responsible for ensuring that the function and other actions are fully secure. They also ensure that all facilities are updated, safe and fully functioning. However, we can’t control what goes in each apartment in the apartment block. So, as you are responsible for what happens inside your block it’s the same with your hosting.

Now let’s understand how hacks actually occur? Well, hacks don’t publish themselves on their own. Basically, they are looking for any weakness in your website that they can explore.  It could be out of the software, weak password and many more. Usually, it’s not anything personal against you. They haven’t attacked you out as an individual or as a business. That’s their automatic chores to look for weaknesses. When they find one, they just do the stuff. The one side of control is that they can do all sorts of damages whether it’s just dephrasing your website or sending fishy emails out wherein on the other side, they can steal your data or mess with your website layout.  But, you can protect yourself from this kind of insecurity. Check out the below-mentioned points to secure your website.

1.    Perform regular automated Backups-

Data backup it’s your first line of defense. If your data is safe, you have got a good chance that you can recover.

2.    Keep your website software up to date-

This is one of the most common issues with most of the websites. Let’s understand this with the example of a Content Management System like WordPress to build your website. It just needs to keep up to date. You can finalize its version on the website of the software you are using. And, if you are using plugins they need to be updated too.

3.    Passwords-

Unfortunately, having lots of passwords just comes with the territory. You have got a password for FTP, CMS, database emails and many more. Keep them strong and change them frequently.

4.    Switch to HTTPS-

You are probably more familiar with HTTPS as it is the paddock area of a website. Traditionally, it is for secure payment pages. But, increasingly it is used as a basic level of a website. It’s also a Google Ranking factor. That’s why more & more website is adopting it. The way it works to create an encrypted link between the browser of the person looking at your website and your actual website gives you complete assurance of security.

5.    Setting up a WAF ( Web Application Firewall)-

Think of a WAF  being like an antivirus for your website. It is security software that continually monitors the traffic and code of your website looking for families threats. WAF not only identifies the threat but eliminated to dealt with immediately. You also get visible and clickable security shields which appear on your website. So, that your clients can say your website is safe and secure.
